Tip number 2 – Do not write websites fully in FLASH.

Flash websites can look very exciting and can work very well if you have a huge budget.  But be warned…

  1. They are not easy to optimize for search engines.
  2. They generally look and perform in a slightly unusual way, the only reason for writing a flash website is because you want to achieve something that cannot be achieved in plain XHTML/CSS.  Please question why you want to do something unusual and make sure that you don’t challenge your user, creating confusing and non obvious menus is a really bad idea.
  3. Generally not accessible.  This means that the website might work for some people and might not work for other, the usability will depend on the individuals technical skills and abilities as well as their software and hardware.

If you really must have some flash then by all means use a little in the banner, but best practice is to conform to the norm and still to decent solid and valid code.

Remember your website is there to enable you to communicate to your clients, it has to be 100% usable and accessible to all.
