I have been talking and bloging for a while about why developing a mobile website often provides much better results that developing a mobile app. But actually I can take this one step further and I am happy to states that you should consider developing your mobile website BEFORE your main website.
Why? Sounds crazy at a time when mobile websites are often considered an after-thought, but I am actually quite passionate about this.
I have been in this industry long enough to remember how it felt to develop websites when the internet first started. Every colour, image, font and piece of functionality had to be carefully considered so that the page would load (s.l.o.w.l.y in those days!) on the dinky little CRT monitors using the 256 colours available.
The problem with the fast internet, big monitors and advances in technology is often that websites are now bloated and filled to the brim with content and functionality. On the contrary when we are designing a mobile website there is so much focus on the customer journey and removing “clutter” that the result is a website that really focuses on what the user needs.
Here’s an example of what I mean. This is the Right Move home page on their “proper” website.
Here is the Right Move mobile website.
Can you spot the difference? The mobile website understands that I am looking to Buy or Rent and just gets straight to the point of asking me which and allowing me to get the info I need.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not suggesting that all our websites should be re-written to be completely sparse and minimalist. I simply think that the process behind creating a mobile website allows us to properly focus on what content and functionality is really important, and once nailed this information should become the foundation of the main website message and journey.
