Web Design - WildLife Aid

The Wildlife Aid Foundation is a charity dedicated to the rescue, care and rehabilitation of sick, injured and orphaned wild animals. The charity’s veterinary wildlife hospital in Leatherhead, Surrey deals with more than 20,000 wildlife emergencies every year and their aim is to return every patient to the wild once they have recovered. The Foundation’s work was the focus of the popular TV series Wildlife SOS on Discovery Channel’s ‘Animal Planet‘ and runs a hugely popular YouTube channel.

The brief was to take the existing logo, devise a colour palette, and create an interesting, engaging and interactive website. There were several functions that had to be built into the site, including: an introduction to the foundation’s work, calls to action for both donations and volunteers, “adopt an animal” schemes, video presentations and live webcams, member logins, an online store, and an important FAQ section to inform members of the public in their interactions with wild animals.

The website needed to be completely responsive as well as flexible enough for the foundation to add new content and sections to it going forward.

Our Solution

The website was created entirely in WordPress, with WooCommerce used for the online store functionality. The footprint backgrounds, ragged edges and friendly, rounded icons all combine with the wonderful animal imagery to make the site immediately engaging for any animal lover. The colour palette made up exclusively of different greens means that, when other colours are used occasionally – for example the red accents on the donation call-outs – they really stand out.

Part of our brief was to migrate more than 400 articles from an old website system to the new site and convert them into an extensive news section with flexible categorisation options and an integrated newsletter subscription system managed via MailChimp.

We are pleased to hear that the new website has been very well received and that Wildlife Aid have seen a significant increase in online donations since its launch!

Data Driven Web Design

Designing a website for a charity can be a challenge.  There are usually many differing thoughts about what will and won’t work and generally it’s difficult to niche since the charity needs to appeal to all.  Charities tend to be time-poor making decisions difficult to make.  We allowed for flexibility within this project right through the launch.

For the Wildlife Aid Foundation web design project we took a data driven approach which saw us redevelopment sections of the website after the launch until we reached the goals required.  We used live data to help us to make design and UX decisions and to split test our theories.

Data driven design is a great strategy as it guarantees better results every single time.
